The Master’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Architecture provides students with a broad general understanding of the fundamentals of architecture on which to build their expertise. The programme equips students with in-depth knowledge of the cultural and practical considerations concerning the field and is oriented towards the themes of sustainability through a humanistic and all-inclusive approach. 

The contents and objectives of the degree programme are based on the provisions of the European Union’s directive for the qualifications of architects.

The School of Architecture enjoys an outstanding reputation and attracts students from all over the world. The quality of education offered by the School of Architecture, combined with Finnish expertise in the design field, is internationally recognized and provides an excellent foundation for working anywhere in the world.

While our Master’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Architecture focuses on sustainability, it covers all major fields of architecture, including public building design, housing design, construction technology, history of architecture, restauration studies, and urban planning and design. 

Thanks to its relatively small size and large number of international students, the environment at the School of Architecture is familiar and multicultural. Our staff and students make up a close-knit community that supports teaching and learning. The quality of teaching is high, as instruction is provided by faculty members who are also pursuing research and are internationally recognised for their prestigious accomplishments as professional architects. This ensures access to the most up-to-date knowledge and creates an inspirational learning environment. We maintain state-of-the-art facilities, such as an open-access digital fabrication lab with 3D-printers, laser cutters and scanner, etc. 

Architectural studies are mostly about learning by doing. The studies mainly consist of lectures and design tasks that are completed individually or in groups. Practical special courses, excursions and architectural student competitions provide variety. Students' own ideas are highly valued. Students are encouraged to develop their own thinking independently yet with full support. In design studios, assignments are in most cases set in real-life situations. Individual projects are developed in close dialogue with professors, assistants and fellow students in a proactive environment, where personal initiative, original ideas and creativeness are encouraged and supported. Students learn by sharing and exchanging ideas with fellow students in group sessions. The results of projects are reviewed in sessions where the students present their work and explain their approach to the assignment and the ideas underlying their solutions.
